Kemah Ghost Tours Detects Spirits
Click2Kemah.com Feature story July 2011
With a fascination for the Great Storm of 1900 and for the Karankawa Indians who history has shown were cannibals, Lauren Kirby started up the Kemah Ghost Tours in August of 2010. She said “I knew Kemah had a lot of spirits lurking about.” She was thrilled to discover that one in 3 people in Kemah have had a paranormal experience! After taking 3 months to interview locals and write her stories, she set off to gain approval and implement her plan!
The 90 minute tour caters to all ages, and is tantalizing, spooky, shocking and horrific. The tour runs through most of the Historic South End district of the boardwalk and makes stops along the way at places such as Madeleine’s Wine Bistro, Brass Lantern Suites, the Historic Light House on water’s edge and Zone 504 Sports Bar; just to name a few. The tour will “take you on a journey through time to experience legend, history and real life supernatural mysteries experienced by locals.
With the addition of a smart phone app available for download, “GhostRadarClassic detects spirits and allows them to speak with us! One customer was skeptical but downloaded it anyway. Halfway through the tour she started screaming ‘Oh my gosh, I don’t believe it.’ The ghost radar displayed her late husband’s name…Tom. Now that’s eerie.”
Recently, a man was able to capture a picture of a female apparition’s face peering from an old home. Lauren said “That turned skeptics into believers!”
Due to its increasing popularity, they offer 2 tours per week-end night, Friday and Saturday at 7:30 pm and at 9:00pm. Groups are always welcome such as birthdays, sports teams, women’s groups couples groups and school groups, and “have always had a blast experiencing this together.”
The tour is certainly not for the faint of heart. But if you have ever been fascinated by the supernatural, or just love a great ghost story; then be sure to call for details 1-888-770-9333 or visit www.GhostToursTexas.com. More tours are being added in Galveston and the Haunted Houston Heights so keep checking back!
Having walked the tour with our extraordinary guide, Emmy the Pirate Queen, I can say the history of Kemah is rich with horrific events as well as amazing stories of love and family. Even if you’re not a believer, you will be amazed at the amount of history that has happened on the Kemah Bay. I can’t wait to go again, and see everything I missed.
As far as the GhostRadar Classic, mine told me I was being followed by a spirit named Don! Pretty creepy, but so much fun!
